Identifying all of the reasons why IASC standards and U.S. GAAP differ would be impossible. However, some of the reasons for the differences can be traced to the characteristics of the standard setters themselves. Although both the IASC and the FASB are concerned with improving the quality of financial reporting and increasing international comparability, they focus on different financial reporting environments. With FASB’s primarily domestic focus, FASB standards overall tend to be fairly detailed, responding to the complexities of the U.S. economic environment and a demand from sophisticated financial-statement users for reliable, high-quality financial information.
